Gambling advertisements have become a popular issue in Australia recently, also with regulatory strengthening, the headlines that TikTok has still been moving forward towards them, albeit cautiously, has sparked a debate. The issue of betting danger was brought into focus once more.

TikTok Will Permit Sports Wagering Ads

According to an ABC News report, TikTok’s advertising policy regarding gambling ads in Australia has become more nuanced. TikTok has reversed its gambling promotional rule with a latest pilot program that permits sports wagering ads from such a single operating company – Sportsbet.

The TikToks in question all have the tagline “Gamble responsibly,” which is in line with current government requirements for gambling advertisements, and are intended for being age-restricted. The advertising content is reportedly difficult to distinguish from regular entertainment content, and some industry experts are worried that such preventive measures are insufficient.

Anti-Gambling Experts Are Concerned

Native advertising, also known as sponsored content, is intended to feel natural and is not easily identified as advertising by design. While some may consider this to be deceptive, the above type of advertisement must always be complemented by additional communication that makes it clear to those who have a sharp eye. However, most opposers of TikTok’s decision to engage in some form of gambling advertising do not criticise the motion due to the fine print.
